As a full time SAP Consultant, I am aware of what it means to have a career in an IT-related field. If you are thinking of changing careers or about to begin your career patch, then an IT-career is the right path.

To be frank, all career these days use IT in some ways. But an IT-based career has a lot to do with IT. Of course, direct coding and programming is the most obvious. But also project management for IT is another huge one if you are from a business background.

Here is 5 reasons why an IT-based career is worth it:

  1. IT’s Hot

The demand for IT professionals is HUGE.

Companies are willing to train people in IT-skills. All you need is a positive attitude towards learning.

Recruiters seek you out. If you gain a little bit of experience (1–2) years, you will start getting lots of request on LinkedIn. This demands makes sure you always have a job security. It’s far easier to switch jobs in IT as companies are desperately looking for IT professionals.

2. Unlimited options

If you choose to work with IT or in IT, you have hundreds of options. Your skills are often transferrable.

If you learn one programming language, you can learn the second one more easily.

But also in terms of scope, you can work in any industry of your choice. Even if you are a programmer, does not mean you have to go code new apps or games. You can work in machine learning.

If you are from a business background and want to work in an IT based filed, working with Salesforce or SAP might be a great idea. Those are a few examples.

If you are a creative and want to use IT to boost your career, simply learn creative digital tools like Adobe photoshop or how to edit videos online.

3. Self-learning

In the area of IT, a lot of can be self-learned. There are online tutorials on YouTube or open courses online. And then there is Udemy. So there is no monopoly of any university or institution to give you a piece of paper that then permits you to seek a job. You are free to learn at your own pace. Employers value skills. You can self-learn those skills in many of the cases. Even completely free. Or you can take online classes. But a university degree is not a pre-requisite for those.

4. Learn, Change, Adapt

As an IT-based worked, you are constantly learning and changing.

New programming languages are created. New versions of old softwares.

There is a huge amount of change going on. With the right attitude, you always stay on top of things.

Learning can be fun. And as an IT-professional, you can use that to keep yourself sharp in your career.

5. Be Your Own Boss & Work as You Like

You can start with websites like upwork.com.

If you work in IT, then you know there is a lot of freelance work opportunities.

The world is becoming more and more mobile and home-office is the new reality, also thanks to COVID.

Agreed that companies differ in terms of their remote-work policies but as an IT-related professional, you can do freelance work around the globe.

With experience, you can set your own hourly rate.

Please don’t underestimate the amount of work and effort it takes to establish yourself as a credible IT-based worker. The point here is that there is a lot of career opportunities out there and you can exploit them by vowing to set yourself up as an IT-related professional. No one has to be coding genius to be an IT-related professional. It’s a mix of soft and hard skills.
